About

Sustainability & Social Responsibility

For us at Christian Fischbacher, sustainability and social responsibility are not a trend, they are a matter of course. We approach our work with thought and attention.

With our production partners, we enjoy long lasting business relationships, some of them older than a century. We carefully select new suppliers to ensure that they meet Christian Fischbacher's high qualitative and ethical standards.

BENU® Recycled:
sustainable fabrics and carpets

In the development of new textiles, we are interested in innovative approaches that can help us to reduce the use of natural resources and to keep raw materials in the production cycle as long as possible. This is how the BENU® Recycled collection came in to being, with its fabrics that are made from recycled materials, mainly plastic bottles and fabric remnants. We launched our first BENU® Recycled collection back in 2009. Since then, through numerous innovations, we have been able to constantly improve and expand the BENU collection. Today, we can offer a whole range of high quality fabrics and rugs made from recycled marine plastic, plastic bottles or industrial fabric scraps.

For all products, we make sure that, compared to a conventional production, the manufacturing process helps to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and the use of natural resources. The latest developments in recycling have allowed us to contribute to the cleaning of our oceans: marine plastic waste is fished from the oceans, cleaned, sorted and processed into high-quality polyester, which we use in the production of our BENU SEA fabrics and carpets.

We are actively committed to an environmentally sound and sustainable future. This commitment has accompanied us throughout the over ten-year-old history of our BENU® Recycled collection and drives us in our continuous quest for innovation. Creative Director Camilla Fischbacher, the initiator of the BENU® Recycled collection, has always been passionate about not letting post-consumer plastic bottles, industrial textile scraps and marine plastic end up as waste, but rather, transforming them into a new source of raw materials. We have always believed in high quality recycled products and continue to do so. The numerous awards we have received for our BENU® Recycled collections confirm our efforts as pioneers in this field.

The collection is basically divided into three categories of recycled products:
BENU® PET, BENU® YARN and BENU® SEA.

The polyester used in BENU® PET is obtained from used, post-consumer PET plastic bottles. The bottles are collected, cleaned, ground, melted down and spun into high-quality polyester yarn. Recycling plastic, a petroleum-based material, makes sense in itself in order to save resources. In addition, the production of BENU recycled polyester yarn requires about 90% less energy and 60% less water than the production of conventional polyester. The latest developments of BENU® PET also include flame-retardant fabrics, which are also suitable for the contract sector.

BENU® YARN fabrics are made from recycled textile waste from the fashion industry. The left-over cuttings from garments factories are collected, sorted by color, shredded into their original fiber form, carded and spun into a new, high-quality recycled yarn. This process eliminates the need for dyeing, which means that, in the production process, much less energy is consumed, no additional dyeing chemicals are needed, and no wastewater is generated.

BENU® SEA is the latest development in the BENU® RECYCLED range: for the production of recycled polyester yarn from marine plastic, plastic waste from the sea is collected, cleaned, shredded and then melted down before being spun into high-quality polyester yarn. The production of recycled polyester yarn from marine plastic makes an important contribution to cleaning our oceans. It also helps save resources of a petroleum-based material, plastic. In addition, the production of BENU recycled polyester yarn requires about 90% less energy and 60% less water than the production of conventional polyester.

We named the collection after the ancient Egyptian mythical bird Benu. It burns to rise again from its ashes, just like the Greek Phoenix. In English, the name is pronounced as "be new", which stands for the recycling concept.
